Like Bogost, I visit my local Walmart more often than I’d like to, and there’s generally nothing fun about it. Picking up the few items I need in the store’s fluorescent-lit sprawl always seems to involve hiking past mountains of junk that I don’t want. Bogost’s insight was that this was a good opportunity to pay “close, foolish, even absurd” attention to that junk.

He began “playing big-box archaeologist,” studying and mentally cataloguing the cornucopia of products he couldn’t have dreamed up if he tried: cheeseburger-flavored Pringles, for instance.

I now play some version of this game every time I’m at Walmart. I challenge myself as I cross the parking lot: What’s the most absurd product I will see? The most poetic? The saddest? The one most revealing of twenty-first-century America? The funniest? Occasionally I think I should propose a collaboration to Bogost: We can start buying our “finds” and fill a gallery with them.

Probably it’s better to just leave the game as it is.
